Cheltenham Festival 2019 Results

For many horse racing fans, Cheltenham Festival 2019 was the perfect example of what the sport is supposed to be. There was plenty of drama, a bit of heart ache, a healthy battle between the punters and the bookies, and a first Gold Cup win for Willie Mullins after 20 years of trying.

That wasn’t the only piece of history made at the festival either, because when Bryony Frost crossed the finish line on Frodon in first position, she became the first female jockey ever to do so in a Grade 1 race at Cheltenham.

What’s more, the festival was in doubt for a time due to the threat from the equine flue crisis, not to mention the potential invasion of drones. But go ahead it did, and with some breath taking racing to follow.

Altior continued his staggering form with an 18th win in a row, taking the Queen Mother Champion Chase after a mistake at the water, helping Nico de Boinville to be crowned top jockey. Willie Mullins took top trainer, but only just, winning 4 to draw equal with Nicky Henderson, so the result was decided on second placed horses.

After worrying reports of poor safety standards at Prestbury Park, things were improved before this year’s festival, resulting in a much safer course and far fewer injuries and fatalities. A particularly heart warming moment came when Aidan Coleman rode Paisley Park to victory in the Stayer’s Hurdle, as the horse was so ill at one point previously that they thought it would have to be put down.
