Cheltenham Festival 2007 Results

This year’s festival was particularly well attended, and started off with a few big name inductions to the Cheltenham hall of fame, namely Martin Pipe, the late David Nicholson, and two horses, Best Mate and Desert Orchid.

After the ceremony, it was time for the racing to begin, and it started with a shock, when Ebaziyan stormed to victory in the very first race, winning the Supreme Novices Hurdle at huge odds of 40/1. Ebaziyan’s odds were so long because he had switched trainers not too long before, with Willie Mullins getting much better results out of him.

Weather worries were proved to be a false alarm, but there was more drama later in day one. This time though, it was the opposite kind. Very sadly, Little Brick sustained a broken leg in the Handicap Chase, and was put down shortly afterwards.

Paul Nicholls took top trainer for the 2nd year in a row, and one of his wins was the Gold Cup itself, thanks to a fantastic run from Kauto Star with Ruby Walsh in the saddle. The horse made a mistake on the last but managed to muddle through nonetheless, completing a perfect season where he won every single race into which he was entered.

Robert Thornton had a particularly good festival too, his four wins landing him the top jockey. One of those wins was the Arkle, but the most prestigious was the Queen Mother Chase, riding Voy Por Ustedes, who himself had won the Arkle the year previous.

Elsewhere, Denman hinted at his future dominance by winning the Novices’ Chase, while Nina Carberry made history as the first woman to win a race at Cheltenham Festival since 1983, when she crossed the line first in the Cross Country Chase.
